Transcript: Interview with His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa by Deborah Peck,
New York City 1980
Question: What is the overall purpose of Buddhist meditation? What are its benefits to the general public of America?
Karmapa XVI: His Holiness feels that there is, in fact, a great benefit because people everywhere are caught up in all kinds of situations of confusion and ignorance, and through the understanding and integration of the Buddhist teaching there is the possibility of a complete breakthrough, in that there is the possibility of becoming completely sane and completely awake, an uprooting of all situations of ignorance and confusion. The Manifestation of Compassionate Activity
From a talk given by HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, University of Colorado, 1980. Because we are in a fortunate time, America, Canada, Europe and the whole world receive the light of the Buddha's compassion. People now want to practice and it gives them much joy. But in order to do the practice, you have to meet with the right situation and this meeting itself is the extraordinary blessing of the Dharma. Read more |

Song of Mahamudra
by HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa
This ordinary mind of nowness is untouched by fixations on birth and
liberation.
Its unceasing manifestation is unshaken by projections.
The realm of Samsara and Nirvana appear simultaneously ‐
This is the effortless path of the marvellous mahamudra.
Seeing the self‐existing ground of insight,
The gates of Samsara and Nirvana fall into step,
And the apparent confusion of the three worlds collapses into space.
The three bodies of enlightenment are arrived at in a natural state,
So why look forward to future results?
This is the special teaching of the Kagyupas
Thinking on that, I emulate my forefathers.

Another Prediction of the Chinese Invasion
by HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, 1949.
The upper, middle, and lower Karma Kagyü seats and the hundred and eighty Karma Kagyü monasteries are all [in trouble]. Even worse, we’ve reached a time where I don’t know how many obstacles are going to affect the Buddha’s teachings. (…) In the end, though, we will have nowhere to flee but India.
All composite things are impermanent. Only the Buddha’s wisdom is not composite; it is therefore the only place to direct our minds.

All sentient beings experience a tiring and never-ending cycle of birth and death. They are also influenced by delusions of the mind. Everything changes constantly. The Buddha's teachings include simple meditation techniques to calm the mind. They make it transparent and radiant. Meditation cleans the habitual tendencies of our mind. Thanks to it, we gain the ability to help all sentient beings. The main purpose of Buddhist methods is to benefit others and ourselves. If we act for the benefit of all sentient beings, we certainly enrich ourselves in this way as well.
The 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje
It doesn't matter if a person believes in me or hates me.
The most important thing is karmic connection.
Even a killer karmic connection
means I can help that person in future lives
-- because we are connected.
I am sad when there is no connection at all,
then living beings will have to suffer further,
-- and I can hardly help them.

Help in the Bardo
„Whomever I had a link with in this life, either good or bad, they always come before me when they are passing through the bardo. Even though they no longer have a physical body, I always recognize who they are. Of course, they also know who I am as free of the limitations of the physical body the spirit in the intermediate state is now clairvoyant. If they have a pure karmic connection thy will remain in my presence until I liberate them. If not, then they fly off and never come back, having taken some new form and new life."

You are constantly busy...
by HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa
You are constantly busy.
The truth of cyclic existence
is very well manifested in your lives.
To remedy this state of affairs
one first needs to calm down the mind.
Do not be completely absorbed
by your surroundings.
Develop some degree of stillness.
Cultivate simple control of mind, tranquility.
At least some openness of the mind
needs to be developed. No matter who you are, everyone needs first to relate
to basic meditation practices,
meditation practices that are specifically designed to bring about the calmness
of the minds of beings who are occupied
in such constant, busy involvement.
This is the first step in the practice
of the Dharma, the Dharma that is so very important for oneself and for others

The instruction that transforms thougts of all three times at once
Is to look at appearance-emptiness, the display of present moment awareness.
By doing this, you will attain the coemergant state of peace.
You will progress through the paths and bhumis and gain the great-bliss awareness.

A True Lama...
by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa
A lama is not just a person sitting on his brocade throne dressed in expensive suits. A true lama is known by his limitless compassion for all living beings. A true lama will sacrifice everything just to help a single being to full liberation, either in this life or the next, he can show them their Buddha Nature and how to realize it.
This is why many offer the best they have to the Lama—to honor him as the source of the Dharma. Of course, there are lamas who have not understood the true nature of these sacrifices, but that is another matter.

A Reminder to Myself
by HH the 16th Karmapa
With your supreme intelligence, you realized the intention
Of the unsurpassable vehicle, the tradition of Padmakara.
Guru of unequalled kindness, I remember you from my heart.
I supplicate you—bless me with your compassion.
I, Pema Trinley Palzang, a performer of three activities,
From now on, will take control of my own discipline in thought and deed.
I make a firm commitment, as follows,
To avoid thoughtlessness and senselessness.

The Karma Kagyu Path
by H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa
Dharma is a word which might stand for any sort of human activity, but it follows that what the students of Buddhism mean by dharma is the transformation of their own inner negativities into something more real. Our inner negativities are the five negative emotions,1 and what we have to do in order to transmute these negative emotions is to follow the Mahayana path. The five negative emotions derive from ignorance and so it is ignorance that we must transmute in the path to freedom.
Many years ago, in the vajraasana [2] at Bodhgaya, India, the Buddha attained full realization and it is from his realization that the tradition of enlightenment derives in our time. And from his teaching we derive the great teachings of tantras, which had an effect like fire burning down a mountainside. From the great fire of the tantras countless numbers of realized siddhas,3 who were renowned for their powers, arose in India. The teachings of these tantras were a very special part of the Mahayana, enabling one to distinguish each moment in its momentariness, and attain complete buddhahood in that moment.

His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa's wishes for 1976
My dear disciples in Karma Dgon[1],
Wishing you all a happy and rewarding new year,
with blessings and prayer
His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa
Wheresoever the teachings of the Enlightened one exist,
May disease among human and cattle disappear completely and may there be good harvest and good bleedings;
May war, bloodshed and violence be ended forever.
O' Dharma, grant blessings of peace and happiness on all quarters of the globe!
May the sublime Doctrine of the Lord that bestows all that is good and auspicious spread in all the ten directions;
May auspiciousness reign supreme to spread peace and happiness in the world!
Auspiciousness reigning in all quarters, let secular and spiritual progress attain the pinnacle of glory;
And may the sublime teachings confer auspiciousness all over to usher in peace, happiness and glory.
His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa, Rumtek, 20-12-1975.

Introduction to Buddhism
Question and Aswers
H.H. Karmapa: There are many people in the world who believe in rebirth and many who do not. But believing in rebirth goes along well with believing in the law of Karma, or cause and effect. In Buddhism, the quality of one's birth is dependent on how sincerely one has respected the law of Karma. If within this particular lifetime you perform virtuous activities, beneficial activities in terms of helping other beings, and activities of kindness and compassion, then it is possible, even certain, that you will experience a fortunate rebirth in the next lifetime.

Words of Advice
All sentient beings experience the tiring and indefinite cycle of birth and death and mind illusions. Everything is ever changing at all times.
The Buddhadharma has a simple meditative technique to calm the mind, thus making it clear and luminous. The purpose is to purify our habitual tendencies and our mind, in order for us to benefit all sentient beings.
The focal point of this meditative technique is to benefit oneself and others. If you wish to benefit sentient beings, you will definitely benefit yourself in the same manner.

Western Visitor's Interview with HH the 16th Karmapa, Rumtek 1979
Q: Some prophecies foretell serious changes, disasters, and even the end of the world within a few years. What do you think about this?
Karmapa: I do not think speculating about the future is helpful. Instead, we should use our time to practice the Dharma so we can become clearer in our minds and can recognize the nature of timeless, primordial awareness. In the same way that pouring cold water into boiling water lessens its agitation, through practice the mind becomes more and more still. Furthermore, this allows us to contemplate the impermanence of all phenomena and thus to use this theme in our meditation practice. We should not get lost with many subjects, but instead allow the fear of threatening dangers to help us understand the impermanence and transitory nature of all compounded things. We will then be applying Dharma’s skillful means.

Inspiration for the Monastery
His Holiness: First of all, would like to wish everybody tashi delek, which means goodness and happiness, and he would also like to mention that here in the great land of America, there is definitely a great revival of interest in the teachings of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha and also in the practice of the teachings.
His Holiness believes that there are three main points as to why this interest has come about and why the Dharma, or the teachings of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha, is becoming relevant in the Western mind.

Prophecy 1944
I will not stay. I will go to faraway places
—I am not certain where--
To use the results of karma from the past.
The cuckoo bird comes to Tibet in the springtime.
On a day when a sad melody is sung six times,
This scenario will occur: People who depend on me will think,
“Where is the man, Rigdröl now?”[1]
Isn’t it sad for all of you who depend on me?
The one called Rigdröl is famous far and wide.
People will be saying, “He is not there, and we’re not sure where he is.”
In its heart, the duck relied on the lake
But the shameless lake brought ice, its partner, and became sealed.
In its heart, the white lion trusted the snowy mountain
But the beautiful white snowy mountain invited sunlight as a partner.
Now I won’t say much. It is just a joke!
But when the two, a joke and a noble meaning, are joined together, in the year hosted by the bird at the time of capturing victory,
I have prayed that we’d meet together happily and joyfully.
Bschu drug pa rig pa’i dor je’i gsung ‘bum, op. cit. Translation by Geshe Dawa Gyaltsen in: Wong, Sylvia: Karmapa Prophecies, Edition Rabsel 2016.
[1] Rigdröl is another name for the 16th Karmapa. After his death, a long period of uncertainty began, as nobody knew where his reincarnation was to be found.
[2] This indicates the bird year 1993/1994.

Bringing The Teachings of Buddha to he West
Reporter: This is the Kali Yuga or the Dark Age. What do you see will come forward as a result of this period?
His Holiness: It's called the Dark Age because the more uplifting and demeritorious qualities of the human world are diminishing, whereas the gross and neurotic aspects of the human qualities are more present and becoming more apparent. One could say that it's like clear water that diminishes or dries up, allowing you to see the mud and clay appearing. This kind of situation has to do with the quality of the human mind.
Reporter: And how does His Holiness see the human race emerging from this age?
His Holiness: It depends on the individual's mental attitude and the collective mental attitude of all people. That is to say, it depends if one lives according to the truth of cause and effect, and respects and realises the significance of that truth. When coming to truth really exists, there is a better chance. Then one is being honest with oneself and honest with others, and in this sincerity, even if one is only sowing the field and growing fruits and grains, everything seems to blossom forth and grow. Whatever we do will attract success, achievement and things happening in a better way. But, on the other hand, when people are swearing at each other and not respecting the truth of cause and effect, and take part in all kinds of gross indulgences, then there is degradation taking place. So it's how one lives that will determine the course.

Centuries ago, Indian Mahasiddhas collected the essence of the Buddha's teachings which were subsequently brought to Tibet. Down to this present day, it is still possible to study these same teachings at an educational institution. In addition, you can actually come to experience the effect of what you have learned and enjoy the fruit of what you have practiced. I have confidence that you all are capable of experiencing this fruition of Buddhahood.

Advice on Spiritual Practice
The practice of dharma involves certain possibilities. How these potentials evolve into actual situations for the practitioner, and how much is possible within these situations depends on the capacity of individual beings. It depends upon the level of teachings that one is able to relate to, such as Mahayana or Hinayana. At this particular time in our lives, the practice of the Mahayana teaching is possible. It is absolutely precious and absolutely rare. Our concern for development and our sense of responsibility has placed us in a position to integrate the preciousness and rarity of the Mahayana teaching with our lives. Through it there is the possibility of the experience of no-returning back into Samsara and the experience of ultimate bliss that is self knowing and in which there are no doubts.

AH HO! Embodiment of all refuges, dharmakaya Vajradhara,
Glorious body of the guru, inseparable from truth,
To you, with overpowering yearning, I sing this song.
Awesome devotion pervades my mind
And the natural state is brilliantly clear
But unable to remain in this penetrating state,
How confused I am in discursive and analytical thoughts!
Contemplating this, I am mindful of the Karma Kagyu
And focus on the self-existing ground of knowledge and emptiness.
