In August 1961, and with the help of Ashok Burman, whom he had met already in 1956, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa set up the Karmapa Charitable Trust, the purpose of which was to work for the “benefit of the Karmapa Order by providing them with food, clothing, shelter, medical aid, education and other necessities of life, (...) “for erecting and maintenance of religious buildings, (...) educational institutions, hospitals and for carrying on and performing religious rites.
